As Lesley Stahl reported in 2015, by studying the collisions, scientists made a major discovery: the Higgs boson. Nobel prize-winning physicist Peter Higgs, the particle's namesake, died this week at 94.

On the fourth of July, the rationing of meat in Britain came to an end, the final step in dismantling Britain's whole wartime system of food distribution. After fourteen long years, Britons can at last tear up their ration books.

The last known slave ship | 60 Minutes Archive
The Clotilda was the last known slave ship to bring enslaved Africans to America in 1860. The burned ship was discovered in Alabama – not far from where many of the descendants live today. The stories of those enslaved Africans have been passed down for generations.

Note that when AIDS first emerged, it was referred to as a mystery illness, the so-called gay plague, and more. Some of the terms used in the initial reporting are now considered offensive.
